With this chapel for Padri Maristi we wanted to create a place with a strong identity and atmosphere that could inspire a sense of mistery, of meditation, of joy and contemplation, of elevation towards transcendence and peace.
The design idea was born from the will to create an ambiance pervaded by a diffused light with a mysterious origin. Those who enter the small church perceive immediately to be ‘elsewhere’ from the place they came from. It’s like when an intense music starts from silence: we are suddenly carried away from the feeling given us by music, our body and spirit feel transformed through a power that strikes us. The entrance doesn’t reveal immediately the interior of the chapel, but introducing the main architectural theme of the church it creates desire and an anticipatory effect.

The whole church is build with a very particular façade system designed to diffuse suffused light inside with a source apparently mysterious: the wooden elements of the façade bring natural light inside just through reflection, giving warm and relaxing tones without revealing the origin of light itself. Due to the form of the façade (see the plan of the church for better understanding) direct vision of the outside is impossible: in the small church a small world arises opening the interior world of the visitor. A strong sense of transcendence is given by the verticality of the wooden elements and by the interior height.
Details are characterized by great simplicity. The chapel design follows modern architecture tradition and spiritual simplicity at the same time.
Natural materials also favour, even unconsciously, a connection with the innermost. Materials are left raw, with great tactile qualities, so to make physical contact more immediate and natural as well as to give warmth and proper tones of light to the interior. The paving is more raw, the wood of the ‘light façade’ smooth planed and the ceiling almost polished. Through the slight modifications of interior light this structure also allows the perception of the exterior atmospheric condition, the feeling of the weather changes, the clouds’ movements and the scent of rain. Furniture is essential and made of wood as well. The chapel has also a small sacristy usable also for practical reasons and storage.

Questa cappella per i Padri Maristi vuole essere un luogo dalla forte identità ed atmosfera che vuole ispirare il senso del mistero, del raccoglimento, della gioia e della contemplazione, dell’elevazione verso la trascendenza e della pace.
L’idea progettuale nasce dalla volontà di creare un ambiente pervaso da una luce diffusa ma dall’origine misteriosa. Chi entra nella piccola Chiesa percepisce subito di essere ‘altrove’ rispetto al luogo da cui proviene. Come quando dal silenzio nasce una musica intensa: di colpo siamo trasportati dalla sensazione che la musica ci regala, il nostro corpo e il nostro spirito si sentono trasformati, con una potenza che colpisce.
L’ingresso non rivela immediatamente l’interno della cappella, ma limitandosi ad accennare le tematiche che pervadono la chiesa crea un effetto anticipatore e un effetto di desiderio.
In tutta la chiesa un particolarissimo sistema di facciata fa sì che la luce si diffonda all’interno creando un’atmosfera dalla forte intensità proprio perché soffusa e dalla provenienza apparentemente misteriosa: gli elementi di legno della facciata raccolgono la luce naturale e la portano riflessa all’interno, donando tonalità calde e riposanti. La visione diretta dell’esterno è occultata, nella piccola chiesa si crea un piccolo mondo atto ad aprire il mondo interiore del visitatore. Un forte senso di trascendenza è dato dalla verticalità molto accentuata degli elementi e dall’altezza interna.
I dettagli sono caratterizzati dalla grande semplicità. Il disegno si inserisce quindi sia nella tradizione architettonica della modernità sia nella ricerca della semplicità spirituale.
La naturalezza dei materiali utilizzati favorisce anche a livello inconscio il contatto con il profondo interiore. I materiali sono lasciati abbastanza grezzi, con elevate caratteristiche di tattilità, in modo da rendere più immediato e naturale anche il contatto fisico, il calore, il tipo di luce che ne deriva. Sarà più grezzo il pavimento, mediamente trattato il legno della ‘parete di luce’ che cinge la chiesa, e più levigato il controsoffitto che fa da copertura. La struttura consente poi la percezione della condizione atmosferica esterna, il sentire il tempo, sentire le nuvole che passano attraverso le modificazioni della luce interna, nonchè per esempio il profumo della pioggia. Anche i pochi elementi di arredo sono essenziali e naturali. La cappella è dotata di una piccola stanza accessoria che funge da sacrestia.
